For this app review, I found Stop Motion Studio in the App Store for IOS. I have been interested in animation and video/audio editing. I was looking for an app to make a stop motion video. I think this would be a fun app to use as part of a lesson. I searched the app store on my iphone and read the reviews on different apps for stop motion animation. This one I found is free and had pretty good reviews. I like that it is user friendly and easy to use for beginners. I feel like even professionals could use this app as well. From what I have been able to do with it so far, it seems to have what I need to make a stop motion video. This was my first time and I had fun playing around with it and trying different things. I found a ton of tutorials when researching how to use the app. I liked that it was easy to figure out if there was not a tutorial. Stop motion is a technique used in animation to make an object appear that it is moving on its own. Such movies as Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline both use stop motion for their animation. The object is moved or manipulated a little bit at a time and then captured by individually photographing each frame. The series of frames are then played in a sequence which creates an illusion of movement. The best part of the app was that a student could figure out the basics without using a tutorial. I would use this in my classroom for teaching my students about animation and how it is created. When you open the app you will see a plus sign and when you click on it, a new project opens and you can begin snapping photos of your object as you move it in different places. You have to move the object in tiny increments to simulate movement. After you click the new project symbol + you then click the camera icon to begin capturing images. Here is a quick tutorial on how to use this app https://youtu.be/X_M468S86HI This app is fun to use but it is time consuming and tedious trying to photograph each image. It might be a good idea to prop your camera up or use a tripod. You have to make sure your camera is steady when you are snapping photos or your video will be blurry, shaky or lack continuity. Be sure to move your object in tiny increments. One con is that if you want to use all of the features, it will cost you $4.99. One of the features of the full version is the erase feature which is useful if you need your item to stand up you can either tape it to the table or hold it and then go back and use the erase feature to erase your hand out of the frame. In the free version, you can use the interval timer to capture images at a certain amount of seconds. For example, you could time it to take a photo every 10 seconds to give you time to move the object so you don’t have to stop and snap the photo after each time you move it. You can also create a time lapse video using the interval timer which would be perfect for art project tutorials/how to videos. You can select different cameras to use as well as different devices with the remote camera. There are different camera settings that you can play around with that give different effects. After you have finished capturing all of the frames you want you can view them in the movie editor. Live view enables you to see frame by frame and the timeline of the photos you took in chronological order. You are able to move the frames around or delete them if needed. You can adjust the frames per second in the movie settings to speed up or slow down or video. The more photos you shoot, the more smoothe your video will be. I definitely forsee using this app in the classroom. The only problem I would see is if the students don’t have the time to spend on it at home. I think that if given enough time in class that the students will be able to create something easy and fun. The first video I made, I was in the middle of making a tissue box cover for my son’s teacher so I played around with taking photos of the process. I also wanted to play around with the interval timer. I am still trying to figure out the right way to use the delayed timer which means each frame stays for a certain amount of time. The second video I only snapped pictures of the object after each time I moved it so each frame is one second long.
