Artist Statement
I consider myself an artisan or as it is more commonly known, a crafter. I enjoy recycled art which is also referred to as trash art. I truly believe in the phrase “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” I love to find old trashed furniture or recycled items and make them into new, updated and functional pieces or wall art. I have transformed wooden crates into nightstands, an old ugly dresser into a little boy’s superhero dream, egg cartons into beautiful roses and an outdated United States Navy uniform into a timeless wreath which captures the honor and sacrifice of the person who wore it. My grandma sparked my passion for art at a young age by always teaching me to express myself through clay, paint or anything we found around the house. We would find art anywhere we went. She taught me that art can be found in almost anything, not just in a museum or gallery. Art inspires me and has been a huge resource for my mental health the past few years. I learned that when you are touching nature it is impossible to feel anxiety. This is my main focus of being connected to the earth in my art. I have a strong belief in finding ways to recycle and reuse sustainable materials to extend the life of them and in turn reducing the amount of waste. I prefer caricature or cartoon drawings over realistic ones. I would rather paint a 3D object rather than painting 2D on a canvas. Other art I enjoy as well is writing, projects with mixed media and crafting with yarn or fabric. I have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising so most of my education has been based on fabrics, textiles and the history of dress in several different eras. |
